چکیده

This paper presents the initial results of a project initiated by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and AirConditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the National Research Council of Canada to investigate smoke movement resulting from a sprinklered fire in a communicating space into an adjacent large open area such as an atrium or retail mall. Recent research on the interaction of sprinkler spray with a smoke layer is also reviewed. In addition, information in the literature from full-scale fire tests of mercantile and office occupancies is discussed. As part of the joint project, a large-scale test facility was established to investigate smoke flow for sprinklered fires. This facility is described in the paper. The results of steady-state fire tests using a propane burner system are discussed. These tests indicate that two smoke flow regimes can occur depending on the fire size. For fires with low heat release rates, the smoke temperature was uniform over the height of the compartment opening and was near ambient. Under this condition, the smoke was nonbuoyant and accumulated near the opening. With higher heat release rates, a two-zone air and smoke flow regime resulted. The smoke exited the compartment in the hot upper layer. The fire test results were used to determine approximate limits for the smoke flow regimes. Preliminary tests were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of opposed airflow systems in limiting smoke flow between the test compartment and the adjacent area. Initial results are also provided for this portion of the investigation.

Simulation of Smoke Emission from Fires in High-Rise Buildings Using the 3D Model Generated from 2-Dimensional Cadastral Data

Having a 3-Dimensional model of high-rise buildings can be used in disaster management such as fire cases to reduce casualties. The fundamental dilemma in 3D building modeling is the unavailability of suitable data sources. However, available cadastral 2D maps could be used as low-cost and attainable resources for 3D building modeling. Smoke will be a great threat to people's health during a f...

Simulation of Visibility in Smoke Laden Environments

Exposure to the products of combustion, both particulate smoke and gaseous, rather than to the fire itself, is the most significant cause of injury and death in fires. The exposure time of individuals in a smoke environment depends upon their speed of movement and the direction they choose to travel, nominally towards a safe exit. Consequently in the fire safe design of modern buildings, the pr...

Smoke Management: toward a Data Base to Validate Pb-piedmont - Numerical Simulation of Smoke on Tee Ground at Night

The use of fire for controlled burning to meet objectives for silviculture or for ecosystem management carries the risk of liability for smoke. Near-ground smoke can degrade air quality, reduce visibility, aggravate health problems, and create a general nuisance. At night, smoke can locally limit visibility over roadways creating serious hazards to transportation. PB-Piedmont, a numerical model...

An Automatic Detection of the Fire Smoke Through Multispectral Images

One of the consequences of a fire is smoke. Occasionally, monitoring and detection of this smoke can be a solution to prevent occurrence or spreading a fire. On the other hand, due to the destructive effects of the smoke spreading on human health, measures can be taken to improve the level of health services by zoning and monitoring its expansion process. In this paper, an automated method is p...

Atmospheric Response and Feedback to Smoke Radiative Forcing from Wildland Fires

Smoke from wildland fires is one of the sources of atmospheric anthropogenic aerosols. it can dramatically affect regional and global radiative balance. Ross et al. (1998) estimated a direct radiative forcing of nearly -20 ~ m ' for the 1995 Amazonian smoke season (August and September). Penner et al. (1992) indicated that the magnitude of the smoke global radiative forcing is comparable to tha...
